High-profile Houston hand surgeon Michael Brown is sentenced to 30 days in a federal prison for allegedly choking a flight attendant and threatening to strip naked on board a transatlantic flight to Miami earlier this year.

“The government and defense attorneys agreed this was a non-jail case and should be handled with time served for his stay in custody when he was arrested, but the judge did not agree with that,” says Brown's attorney Jack Zimmerman.

Brown also will serve two years supervised probation and pay a $5,000 fine, both were conditions of a plea deal.

“Instead the judge sentenced him to 30 days, which I'm not happy with,” Zimmerman told KTRH News.  “Considering it was a federal felony, I'm sure Dr. Brown would rather not spend any time in jail, but it could have been a lot worse.

Brown must report to jail next month.

The sentence came sandwiched between Brown's bankruptcy hearing this week, and a very public divorce case scheduled to begin Monday.
