The Freedom From Religious Foundation has sent a letter to a Texas public school district saying it violated the constitution when a principal led students and parents in prayer before a kindergarten graduation.
The Beaumont Enterprise reported Saturday the letter was dated June 3rd. It was addressed to Lumberton Independent School District Superintendent John Valastro. The letter says a "serious violation" of the First Amendment occurred when the principal of the district's early childhood department led the prayer.
The organization says in the letter it was contacted by a parent.
Attorney Curtis Soileau says the district has not yet responded to the letter but takes it seriously.
The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled several times that prayer in public schools is unconstitutional.
