During an interview with the Lone Star Q – a statewide LGBT news source – Houston's openly gay mayor called Duck Dynasty's Phil Robertson a “redneck wingnut” whose views are “completely irrelevant.”

Mayor Annise Parker clarified her statement Saturday when tweeting “I was serious.  Who cares?”

GOP strategist Matt Mackowiak says while not surprising, Parker's comment may come back to bite her later on.

“The gay rights issue is one that has been very much central to her political identity and her personal life, so she felt it was important to step into this issue,” he tells KTRH News.  “But I'm not sure I see an upside for her politically, because Texas is pretty socially conservative.”

Mackowiak says these are the types of comments which hurt people seeking higher office.

“She obviously just got elected to a new term as mayor, and is going to serve that term, but I think she also is looking toward a statewide run in the future,” he says.

“She needs to think about the politics in Texas, and just because there's a controversy it doesn't mean you need to weigh-in.”

Parker has become more vocal about gay rights since being elected to a third term, and now finds herself in a legal battle after granting city benefits to same sex couples legally married in other states.
