If you are stopped on suspicion of drunk driving, they're going to take your blood. It's a “No Refusal Initiative,” coming at least partially in response to the deaths of nine people in drunk driving accidents over a 10-day period.
“What is it going to take?” Harris County District Attorney Devon Anderson asks. “Houston. Harris County. What is it going to take to get the message that drinking and driving kills?”
Anderson says, if you're drunk, the mandatory blood draw will catch you -- and that means either jail time, or a really big fine.
The law enforcement community is “all in” on this initiative, with very few of them taking time off during the holiday.
“There will be extra prosecutors on duty,” she says, “a judge on duty and a phlebotomist.”
