A Houston area congressman is raffling off a free AR-15 – urging his supporters to "grab this gun before Obama does."

Friendswood Republican Steve Stockman admits the raffle is meant to draw attention to his re-election campaign, but says it also sends a strong message to the White House.

“We thought it would be a good idea to highlight personal defense of individuals by raffling off a gun,” Stockman tells KTRH News.  “And so far we've had a great deal of positive response.”

The only complaints he says, are coming from what Stockman describes as the 'looney left.'

“A lot of the liberal bloggers seem to be upset that someone would exercise their right to free speech and practice the Second Amendment,” he says.

Stockman said his office reported about 11,000 people had signed up for the raffle as of Friday.

“I think if you stand on principals and you stand for the Second Amendment and defense of the Constitution, that's a good place to be,” says Stockman.  “That's where we're staking out our campaign, and we intend to stay strong defending the Constitution.”

Stockman will announce the winner of the Bushmaster AR-15 on July 4.
