Houston family therapist Mary Jo Rapini says parents are failing their kids in at least one area.

“Talking to their kids about sexuality and explaining it’s about a relationship and it's not about having sex,” Rapini says.  “I think the sooner you do that, the better.”

Rapini is reacting to research suggesting teenagers who text a lot -- up to a 100 times a day -- may be more likely to be sexually active.  If they are sexting, your child is six times more likely to be having sex.

She says the numbers may be exaggerated, but you should be talking to your teen about relationships.  She says just because you give your child a cell phone doesn’t mean it needs to be a fully-functional smart phone.

“I would give my child a very low-functioning phone,” she says, “and I would tell my child I would be checking it every day.”
