In the 1960s an FCC commissioner famously said television was a 'vast wasteland.' Many shows have done little to counter that notion. But now a new study goes so far as to claim too much TV can kill you!

Media critic Chris White at Sam Houston State says it's easy to criticize television.

"I mean, sure there's a lot of TV shows that you dismiss out of hand because you don't like them. I mean, let's face it, you can argue 80% of everything is crap."

White says the competition between cable and network TV has led to a lot of quality shows, like the Sopranos and Game of Thrones.

"Let's face it, one man's dirt is another man's diamond. Back in the 1960s maybe the Flintstones rocked your boat."

But good TV may be worse for you than bad TV if it gets you to watch more of it and become even more sedentary.
