Football icon Oail Andrew "Bum" Phillips has passed away.

The former Houston Oilers and New Orleans Saints Coach died Friday.  Phillips was an icon here in Houston, where his son Wade is the Defensive Coordinator for the Texans.

About 10:00pm Friday night his son Wade tweeted, "Bum is gone to Heaven, "Loved and will be missed by all-great Dad, Coach and Christian."

During his career Bum Phillips went 55-and-35 in leading the Oilers from 1975-1980.  He went on the coach the Saints for five seasons.

Phillips was born on September 29, 1923 in Orange, Texas. His nickname "Bum" was given to him as a child because his younger sister wasn't able to pronounce "brother" properly.  Bum said, "I don't mind being called Bum, just as long as you don't put a 'you' in front of it."

Phillips is survived by his second wife, Debbie, six children from his first marriage, and almost two dozen grandchildren.  Phillips died at his home in Goliad, Texas. He was 90-years-old.
