For those of us who remember the day, the time, the era, the memories come in a series of flashbacks, as if there exists a language that only we know.
“This is a generation weaned on Watergate, and there is no presumption of innocence and no presumption of good intentions. Instead, there is a presumption that, without relentless scrutiny, the government will misbehave.
More than two years filled the space between the night five men known by a select few as “The Plummers” left a piece of tape on an external door to the Watergate building, alerting a security guard of their presence in the Democratic National Party headquarters, and the day Richard Nixon resigned.
“A man is not finished when he is defeated. He is finished when he quits.”
“I am not a crook.”
E. Howard Hunt
Sock it to me?
“What did the president know and when did he know it.”
Peace with honor
Senator Sam Ervin
“There is a cancer on the presidency.”
The smoking gun.
“Therefore I shall resign the Presidency at noon tomorrow.”
The greatness comes not when things go always good for you, but the greatness comes when you are really tested, when you take some knocks, some disappointments, when sadness comes; because only if you've been in the deepest valley can you ever know how magnificent it is to be on the highest mountain. Always give your best. Never get discouraged. Never be petty. Always remember: Others may hate you. But those who hate you don't win, unless you hate them. And then, you destroy yourself.
-Richard M Nixon-
“Our long national nightmare is over.”
